U.S. Disabled Ski Team – A Winning History
The USDST has been preeminent in its sport since the mid-1980s. Here is a recap of theTeam's accomplishments:
- 1986 - USDST alpine skiers led all nations at the World Championships in Saelen, Sweden, with 59 medals, almost twice as many as runner-up West Germany.
1990 - The 1990 World Championships were held in the USA with nordic races in Jackson, New Hampshire, and the alpine championships in Winter Park, CO. U.S. skiers defeated all comers in Winter Park, earning 89 medals; Germany came in second with 37. In Jackson, U.S. nordic skiers collected five medals.
1992 - USDST athletes dominated the Paralympics. Alpine skiers took home 42 medals, including 19 gold. Germany came in second again, capturing 22. Americans also picked up three cross country medals (two of them gold).
1994 - U.S. disabled alpine skiers collected 39 medals (24 of them gold), compared to 32 for Germany. In cross country, America took home four medals. The Europeans, emulating the year-round training methods of the U.S., began closing the gap in alpine.
1996 - USDST alpiners won 11 gold medals at the World Championships in Lech, Austria, while Austria tied the U.S. team for the most medals won (29).
1998 - Americans collected 32 Paralympics medals, including 14 gold in alpine and 2 bronze in cross country.
2000 - Again, the USA claimed the most medals at the World Championships with 31, 11 of them gold. The nordic team captured eight medals. Germany came in second with 30 medals total.
2002 - Competing on home ground, the U.S. disabled alpine and cross country skiers led the Paralympics medals count with 42, including 37 in alpine and the first cross country relay medal for U.S. athletes.
2004 - At the 2004 World Championships, USA regained the Nations Cup, earning 24 medals (including a nations-leading nine golds), and USDST athletes collected seven World Cup trophies.
